The Ancient Legacy
Can you name a country where different religions are practiced at the same time and without any fear of persecution? It is nowhere except in India, the land of religious harmony. But the confusion remains how can it be since throughout the world there is a rising tendency of religious strife. The answer to this remains within the culture of India, or to be very precise the tenets of the Hindu religion, the most dominant religion of India. For centuries the Hindu religion has considered all other religions as true ways to attain the God, for which there has never been any instance of religious persecution from the Hindus. This has led to the growth of these religions in the country without any fear, and that same practice is going on till today. The best example of this can be the various religious festivals, which do play an important role in binding its people in both their personal and public aspects, creating a country of profound culture and distinctiveness.
In this regard it should be noted that Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism are the three ancient religions, which were originated in India. Hindus are concentrated in general in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka and for that reason these places have been the centers of activities of this culture since time immemorial. For this liberalism many religions that were born from the womb of Hinduism like Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism tried to go out of its sphere of influence from time to time but have not been able to and have accepted the Hindu influence.
The Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists, though follow their own religions are still part of the Hindu way of life in that they worship the Hindu gods and goddesses and even name themselves after the Hindu names. Thus the term Hinduism, irrespective of the time and origin, represents the much older native culture and traditions of ancient India, comprising of India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, etc.
