The New Religion
Cricket in the Indian environment is regarded as the most popoular game. Truly speaking this fame of cricket is not confinded only in India but also throughout the Indian subcontinent. The country has been a proud and consisitent participant in the international structure of test cricket from the year 1932. Even in the realm of one-day cricket and newly introduced Twenty20 cricket India has shown its brilliance. However there have also been abortive moments that have plunged the country into despair. But the supporters have never lost confidences in the inherent strength of their team. It is this hard belief in the competence of the team that has produced world famous players till now. The most prominent of them include Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. It was under the tigerish leadership of Kapil Dev India managed to win the World Cup in 1983 which is the one and only till now. However, under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly India reached the final of 2003 World Cup but had to end as the runner up. Other than this the country has also other feathers to its cap. In the year 1985 under Sunil Gavaskar India won the first (and only) World Championship of Cricket. Again, in the year 2007 India won the ICC World Twenty20 under Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
It must be said that from its commencement in 1932 India has traveled lots and by now is a matured partaker in the international ambience. But it must be said that this has been at the cost of the degradation of other sports in the country, to some extent. In the same period there has been the downfall of Indian soccer and hockey and cricket has filled that vaccum. In addition, there has been the mighty presence of legendry players like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev. This has made the entire scenario more elegant and gorgeous. Cricket is truly the new religion of India.
