The Indian news industry is in no way a new phenomenon and has a long history starting from the heyday of the British Empire. From those days till now the Indian news industry has proceeded through lots of changes in accordance with the technological development of ages. Gone are the days when there used to be preponderance of newspapers within the country. It has been occupied by the audio-visual channels to a certain extent, nowadays, yet the newspapers play a prominent role in the Indian society. The influence of this role is such that the Indians have greater confidences on the media even than their own governments. To a recently completed study it has come out that about 37 per cent of Indians have convictions on the audio-visual channels, 36 per cent on newspapers, 7 per cent on radio and news magazines. This indicates that the Indian news media is sufficiently impressive on the society and this prevalence is increasing with the passing of years.
Now even among the segments of newspapers, audio-visual channels and magazines there are different tiers. These tiers are determined by the circulation rates and T.R.P. of the newspapers and audio-visual channels respectively. To a recent study, the prominent Indian newspaper Hindustan Times has come up as the largest circulated single edition. The newspaper daily publishes 1,175,339 copies. In the next position there is the Ananda Bazar Patrika of Kolkata1 with130,167 copies. The third position is occupied by The Times of India with 1,102,772 copies. However, it should be stated, The Times of India along with its eight editions and a combined circulation of 2,771,669 copies has become the number one multi-edition daily. The next positions are occupied by Dainik Jagran, Dainik Bhaskar and The Economic Times group respectively.
Now, as far as the audio-visual channels are concerned, the highly popular channel Aaj Tak dominates the industry. It has been found to be the most favored and confided news channel among the Indians. This is followed by the Doordarshan, Star News, NDTV, Zee News, E-tv. The introduction of more and innovative programs has made the war, among the news channels, to have better audience response intense.
