Need of more Struggles for Emancipation
The Indian society from the pre-historic times has been rather complex if compared with the societies of other countries. While on one hand there has been the influence of the caste system, on the other the predomination of the Brahmanical Hinduism has been noteworthy. This and several other reasons have led to the formation of unequal social relations between men and women within the family and the economy. These are revealed from time to time in the most brutal manner by the means of Sati (burning of widows on pyres), public lynching and the gross failure of the state in transforming the existing social relations based on oppression, exploitation and dependence. Other than this the socio-economic arrangements on the basis of sex/gender are also perceived in several ways. The most prominent of them have been the unequal wages against male counterparts for the same job, disadvantaged position in health and education and the different forms of exploitation and harassment. However, it should be noted, that the equality of sex to the Constitution of India is a guiding principle but its effective implementation is still a distant dream. Well, this position of Indian women is not only included within the poorer classes or the rural regions. On the contrary these ways of helplessnesses of women persist in all classes and castes in India.   
        
This brings us to the conclusion that the position of women has not changed much than the previous centuries. Indeed there had been and is still the presence of social reformers and their struggles have been commendable. There are also the necessary laws but without any effect. For instance, till now stray reports of Sati Dah still come. Though this atrocious act was banned by the then British Government in 1829, still now it is a relevant fact in India. The government and the police remain standstill in this situation and try to divert the attention through all means. 
Though the NGOs concerned with the welfare of women are fighting tooth and nail but a long way is still to be traveled for the women’s emancipation.
