Lucknow is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, which is the most populous state in India. Besides being the capital of the state it is also the administrative headquarters of both Lucknow district and Lucknow division. The city is situated in the heart of the Gangetic plain and is surrounded by the rural towns and villages of Malihabad, Kakori, Mohanlal ganj, Gosainganj, Chinhat, Itaunja. The city has in its eastern side the Barabanki distrct, while in the western side there is the presence of Unnao district. Again there is Raebareli district on the south and Sitapur and Hardoi districts on the north. The chief river of the city is Gomti that moves through the city and divides into both Trans-Gomti and Cis-Gomti regions. The city in general enjoys a warm subtropical climate. However, there is also the presence of a strong winter season from December to February while from April to June hot winds rule supreme. The city is also fortunate to get a good rainy season from mid-June to mid-September with an average rainfall of 1010 mm.
Lucknow from ancient days has been reputed for aristrocacy and association with the royal past. It has also been regarded as the confluence of elite Hindu-Musilm culture. The blue-blooded manners of court, along with poetry, music, and fine cuisine have ruled the ambience of the city for years. To be precise, several literary, art traditions and styles have evolved from this city through ages. Even in the cause of politics the city has proved it to be vibrant. The city played a glorious role in the first phase of the national freedom struggle. Whether it was the Lucknow Pact of 1916 or the Khilafat Movement, the city played a prominent role and sided with the illustrious leaders to wage struggle against British rule.
Economiclly apart from being a major market & trading city Lucknow has also proved itself to be an important center of goods and services. Theer is the presence of a good number of central and state government offices that employ a large section of people. Simultaneously, Lucknow has got further exposure through liberalization that have allured the investors to invest in the city in greater numbers. The city has proved itself to be a major center for recruitment of IT personnels for the nearby BPO hubs of Noida and Gurgaon along with for Bangalore and Hyderabad. Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) have also good presences in the city.
