Bangalore is the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka and is located on the Deccan Plateau in the south-eastern part of the state. The city happens to be the third most populous city of the country. Geograhically the city is located in the central part of the Mysore Plateau (a region of the larger Precambrian Deccan Plateau) at an average elevation of 920 m (3,018 feet). The ideal position of te city is at 12.97° N 77.56° E and covers an area of 741 sq. km. (286 mi²). The greater part of the city of Bangalore is in the Bangalore Urban district of Karnataka and the surrounding rural areas are a part of the Bangalore Rural district. In the recent days the Government of Karnataka has carved out the new district of Ramanagaram from the old Bangalore Rural district. There is no such major river in the city, yet the Arkavathi and South Pennar cross paths at the Nandi Hills, 60 km (37 mi.) to the north. There is the River Vrishabhavathi, which is a minor tributary of the Arkavathi. It arises within the city at Basavanagudi and flows through the city.

The city is in no way a recent creation and dates back to thousands of years ago. The first name of the city appears during the regin of Kempe Gowda I. This reign has been declared as the beginning of modern era of Bangalore. He was instrumental in building a mud fort and established it as a province of the Vijayanagara Empire. It was during the British raj when the city became a centre for colonial rule in South India. Truly speaking, the city has made considerable developments in the independent period and is at present one of the prominent and growing metropolitans in India and also world.

The city has ben traditionally the home of a good number of prominent public sector companies in the sectors of heavy industries, aerospace, telecommunications, machine tools, heavy equipment, and defence establishments. In the last decade or more Bangalore has made exponential deveopments in the IT sector and has earned the name Silicon Valley of India. The city is at present regarded as one of the most renowned centers of IT industry in India. This recent saga has augmented its eminence and developed into one of India's major economic hubs. Apart from this bangalore is also a hub for biotechnology related industry in India and in the year 2005, around 47% of the 265 biotechnology companies in India were located here; including Biocon, India's largest biotechnology company.
